FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Inaugural NY State Abolitionist Commemoration Day Flag Raising Ceremony

Niagara Falls, NY, July 19, 2024 – WNY Films, Arts, and Media, Inc., and the 5th Annual Niagara Falls Juneteenth Committee under the direction of The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the founders of black history month, is proud to announce a special flag-raising ceremony on July 22, 2024, in commemoration of the historic milestone achieved on July 22, 2020. On this day, Bill #A08531 and Bill #S06658 were officially passed, designating the 2nd Monday in July as Abolition Commemoration Day in the State of New York.

The inaugural flag-raising ceremony anywhere in NY State will take place at Niagara Falls City Hall, 745 Main St, Niagara Falls, NY 14301, symbolizing the unity and progress in recognizing the abolition of slavery in New York State in 1827. This is in memory of the Abolition Act passed by the State Legislators on March 31, 1817, abolishing slavery in New York State, effective July 4, 1827. This event honors the resilience and perseverance of those who fought for freedom and equality and serves as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging our history and working towards a more just and inclusive society.

"I am proud Niagara Falls City Hall is hosting the Inaugural NY State Abolitionist Commemoration Day Flag-raising," Assemblymember Angelo J. Morinello, Assembly District 145, continued, "The flag-raising is a reminder we are all one universal family while respecting our individuality."

Jacob J. Fleming, Sr. stated, "This is New York State's true Juneteenth, paying homage to the abolitionists who courageously blazed the trail towards freedom and equality.”

Community members, local officials, and supporters are invited to join us on this momentous occasion as we raise the flag high to remember the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our shared heritage.

About

The Niagara Falls Juneteenth celebration debuted in 2019 with a momentous Freedom Day event at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center. Since then, the festival has blossomed into a vibrant annual tradition, kicking off with a symbolic flag-raising ceremony at City Hall. Following the flag-raising, a lively parade sets off from City Hall, culminating at Legends Park, where attendees can immerse themselves in a day filled with diverse vendors, engaging in basketball tournaments, uplifting concerts, and more. This celebration embodies the spirit of Juneteenth, honoring the historical significance of emancipation while fostering community unity and celebrating African American heritage in the heart of Niagara Falls.
